Anita Kiperman made a lasting mark on the Rice community, and to ensure that her vital legacy of Spanish language education and outreach continues, her family has created the Anita Kiperman Spanish Language Fund. In recognition of her love of the Spanish language, literature, and her championing of students, the Fund will support annual awards to students studying Spanish in the Department of Modern and Classical Literature and Cultures, the Madrid and Cuba travel programs, and a Spanish language lecture series.
For Anita, Rice was much more than her place of work; it was her sanctuary. After joining the Department of Hispanic and Classical Studies in 1973; she thrived and flourished among her intellectually vibrant and supportive colleagues. In turn, she enriched, nurtured, and inspired her students for the next 25 years. At Rice, she dedicated time and energy to students as an Associate at Hanszen College, and her O-Week freshman and student dinners at her home were legendary. She was a faculty sponsor for HACER (Hispanic Association for Cultural Enrichment at Rice) and developed innovative courses in Medical Spanish and Business/Legal Spanish. Rice gave her a platform to collaborate with colleagues at the University of St. Thomas, Casa Argentina de Houston, the Institute of Hispanic Culture, and the Argentine Consulate. Through these partnerships, she helped share the best of what Argentine writers, artists, and musicians had to offer with the Rice and greater Houston communities through the creation and support of scholarships for diverse music and art exchange programs in Argentina, as well as many local programs.
After retiring from Rice as Lecture Emerita of Spanish in 1998, she continued to work in outreach and education of music, arts, and archaeology with many Houston-based organizations- the Institute of Hispanic Culture, the Houston Grand Opera, Society for the Performing Arts, and Archaeology Now.
