In fact, most gifts to Rice Engineering are less than $1,000 but together they add up to millions for student awards, academics, research and programs so we can educate leaders and tackle grand challenges. The BioEngineering Excellence Fund

Contributions made to the BIOE Department Excellence Fund are used in the best way possible to secure the department’s vision and support our students. These funds enable the chair to direct donations to areas of highest priority, supporting outstanding faculty and students, and fostering responsibility for future engineers to achieve excellence. Private support allows resources and flexibility to act on new initiatives, the added support to continue making measurable progress when trends in federal funding decrease, and the ability to grow long-term programs in education and research that advance Rice’s leadership in the biological age.

The David Hellums Memorial Fund in Bioengineering

Created to further enhance our research and education in Dr. Hellums’ name, this fund honors the late Dr. J. David Hellums, a distinguished Rice University academic bioengineer and former dean of the school of engineering. He was a pioneer in developing cardiac assist devices and in investigating the effects of shear forces on human red blood cells and platelets. As an insightful and encouraging mentor, Dr. Hellums was influential in propelling many Rice graduate and undergraduate students into successful careers in chemical and biomedical engineering.

The Larry McIntire Research Fund in Bioengineering

This fund honors Dr. Larry V. McIntire, a distinguished academic biomedical engineer and former Rice University teacher and investigator for 35 years. Dr. McIntire successfully integrated aspects of chemical engineering, molecular and cell biology, and biomedical science at the Texas Medical Center to establish the Department of Bioengineering at Rice. He served as the founding chair of the department and is intensely admired by colleagues and students at all levels of training. During his long tenure at Rice, and later as chair of the Biomedical Engineering Department at the Georgia Institute of Technology, Dr. McIntire became an international leader in bioengineering research and education. Many of his students have also become leaders in the field.
