Mariachi Luna Llena is Rice’s very own student-run mariachi band dedicated to cultural and musical enrichment on-campus as well as across the greater Houston area. Some of our past performances include Ritmo, our campus’ Hispanic and Latine cultural showcase; major sporting events like for the Astros, Dynamos, and Rockets; the Houston Mayor’s Holiday Spectacular; Go Tejano Day Mariachi Invitational at the Houston Rodeo; and private celebrations like birthday parties and school festivals. Every year we also put on our Spectacular concert, which is open to the Rice community and beyond, as a showcase of the music that we have learned over the course of the year.
In addition to being a student-run club, we are a primarily student-funded organization. With the additional generosity of Rice’s Student Activities/President’s Programing (SAPP) fund and the ALFA Cultural Programming Fund, we are able to put on events for the community like our annual Spectacular and our annual Posada celebration. Donating a gift to MLL would mean a lot to us, as it would aid in our musical development, performance outreach, and ability to showcase the mariachi culture across our community.
Your gift would go on to support the following key areas:
Instrument and traje upkeep: purchasing new instruments, fixing older instruments with replacement parts (i.e., guitar or vihuela strings), protective cases for larger instruments like the guitarrón, cleaning and maintaining our traje uniforms. Providing the utmost care for our instruments will allow us to perform our best.
Musical endeavors: expanding our music library for our performances, such as for our Annual Spectacular, and competition opportunities. We are always looking for more funds to dedicate to instrument and uniform upkeep as well as venue rentals and continued development through clinics and teachers.
Spectacular costs: covering venue reservation fees, advertising costs for materials like posters for our annual Spectacular.
