The Oshman Engineering Design Kitchen (OEDK) celebrated a decade of world-changing student innovations in grand style with hundreds of Rice students, faculty, staff and friends at the OEDK 10th anniversary bash on Feb. 22. The two-stage event began with a gathering of the facility’s backers at the OEDK and then moved to the North Lot for a public party featuring food, an engineering art competition and live music. |

Rice Owls women’s basketball finishes season with school record 28 wins |

An amazing Rice women's basketball season came to a close on March 22 as the 12th-seeded and No. 21 ranked Owls lost their first game in 93 days in a 58-54 overtime setback in the NCAA Tournament opening round to No. 5 seed and No. 18 ranked Marquette at Reed Arena. The Owls (28-4), who set a single-season school record in wins, were playing in their third-ever NCAA Tournament and first since 2005. |

Khan Academy founder speaks candidly on reimagining education |

Sal Khan, the founder of free online education platform Khan Academy who was named one of Time magazine’s 100 most influential people in the world in 2012, spoke Feb. 28 in Stude Concert Hall as part of the Rice University President’s Lecture Series. In a lecture titled “Education Reimagined,” Khan told the story of how he founded Khan Academy, a nonprofit organization that is educating millions of people across the world. |

Professors' ‘Cultures of Energy’ podcast taps growing audience for global conversation |
|
A lot has happened since Rice professors Dominic Boyer and Cymene Howe released the first episode of their podcast, “Cultures of Energy,” in January 2016. Episodes of the podcast, which recently hit 200,000 total downloads, have been taught in classes and cited in journal articles. Dedicated listeners have been tuning in from nearly every single continent, including a small but enthusiastic fan base in Mongolia. “We found that the resonance was faster and deeper than we thought it would be,” Boyer said. |

Rice registry highlights impact of Hurricane Harvey |

Hurricane Harvey was one of the most destructive storms in U.S. history, and its most enduring impact was on the mental health of Houston-area residents, according to a new report from Rice University’s Hurricane Harvey Registry. “The purpose of the registry is to identify and track Harvey’s long-term health and housing impacts, tailor interventions based on what we learn and better prepare us for future events,” said Rice University Provost Marie Lynn Miranda at a press conference with Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner. |
