Greetings from Rice! We are nearly midway through the spring semester, and our students are actively engaged in a range of activities both inside and outside the classroom. Everyone is working hard on individual projects, and many are also giving their time and thoughtful effort to tasks aimed at bettering our community for all. This commitment to others reflects our Rice values and the collaborative spirit that is present among our students, faculty and staff.

Rice Access and Opportunity Portal now open
 

The Access and Opportunity portal is a website dedicated to making the Rice community open and accessible to all undergraduate students. Students can learn about a range of financial resources available to them and make requests for support.

 
 
Reginald DesRoches named new Rice University provost
 

Reginald DesRoches, the dean of Rice University’s George R. Brown School of Engineering, has been named the university’s new provost, effective July 1. With this appointment, DesRoches will assume one of the university’s most important leadership posts. Together with the deans and vice provosts, the provost’s office supports excellence in all of the university’s academic, research, scholarly and creative activities.

 
 
‘Radical Revisionists’ opens to full house at Rice’s Moody Center for the Arts
 

Rice’s Moody Center for the Arts welcomed over 600 guests for the opening reception of “Radical Revisionists: Contemporary African Artists Confronting Past and Present.” A variety of viewpoints are offered throughout the exhibition, which brings together the work of 10 contemporary African artists commenting through sculpture, large-scale photography, a virtual reality installation and, in the case of Serge Attukwei Clottey’s piece, performance art.

 
 
Officer Clemente Rodriguez named Rice police chief
 

Clemente Rodriguez, who has served on campus for nearly two decades while rising through the ranks of the Rice University Police Department, has been named the university’s new chief of police. As Rodriguez takes command, campus safety remains at the forefront of the Rice experience.

 
 
Rice on pace to double research funding by 2027
 

Rice University faculty have upped their game when competing for large, multi-institutional sponsored research awards over the past two years, and that trend has the university on pace to meet an ambitious goal of doubling research funding to about $250 million by 2027.

 
 
Inclusive teaching featured at 7th annual Center for Teaching Excellence Symposium
 

Acclaimed educator Bryan Dewsbury delivered an insightful lecture and workshop on inclusive teaching at the 7th annual Center for Teaching Excellence Symposium. Inclusive teaching involves acknowledging the diverse backgrounds and experiences in a classroom and understanding how these differences can be hindrances or strengths for students entering a new course.

Annual ‘Resumayhem’ draws students to Center for Career Development
 

Cupcakes, Korean barbecue, dumplings and ice cream weren’t the only reason Huff House was packed with Rice students Jan. 17. The annual open house and “Resumayhem” at the Center for Career Development was also the perfect chance for students to polish their resume and interview skills — after polishing off some free food truck grub.

 
 
Rice Coffeehouse celebrates 30 years of caffeinating and caring
 

Coffeehouse has become much more than somewhere to grab a cup of coffee and study. Rice students describe the beloved student-run business as a centralizing force for Owls to connect and share a common space on campus.

 
 
Audrey’s coffee shop now open in Jones School
 

In addition to Coffeehouse and the Brochstein Pavilion, enjoy a new spot for coffee when visiting your Owl. Audrey’s is now open for business after a soft launch last semester. Tucked into a first-floor corner of McNair Hall in the Jones Graduate School of Business, Audrey’s is the latest project from Houston coffee maven David Buehrer, who also runs popular shops in Rice Village, Montrose, the Heights and Greenway Plaza.

 
 
Owls gear up for Rice Night at the Rodeo on Mar. 11
 

Students can show their Rice pride and cheer on President Leebron, Sammy the Owl and other Rice notables as they saddle up and ride out into the NRG Stadium rodeo arena to kick off this special night of celebration. Rice Owls can enjoy half-priced carnival packs and other great discounts for this annual tradition.

 
 
Rice women win C-USA indoor track and field title
 

The Rice women’s track and field team won the Conference USA Indoor Championships that concluded Feb. 23 in Birmingham, Alabama. It was the program’s fourth C-USA indoor title and first since 2009. Freshman Grace Forbes led all women with 20 points by winning both the mile and 3,000-meter run, and coach Jim Bevan was named C-USA Indoor Coach of the Year for the third time in his career.

Join the Kinder Institute May 18 to celebrate 10 years building better cities and building better lives
 

On May 18, Dr. Stephen L. Klineberg will present findings from the 39th Kinder Houston Area Survey, which has tracked the changing attitudes and experiences of Houstonians since 1982. The institute will also honor Reverend William A. Lawson, pastor emeritus of Wheeler Avenue Baptist Church, for more than 60 years of service to our city and its residents.
