In an era dominated by rapid technological shifts and cultural re-evaluations, how do we make sense of experiences that defy standard scientific and materialist frameworks? Scholar of religion Jeffrey J. Kripal (Rice University), and literary critic and eco-theorist, Timothy Morton (Rice University), will explore Kripals’s currently airing AMC/Sundance documentary series, Archive X. The series translates decades of groundbreaking scholarship on consciousness, religion, and the paranormal, and explores how stories of the unexplained shape human culture and push the boundaries of empirical reality. The evening features a 20-minute screening from Archive X, a dynamic on-stage conversation between Kripal and Morton, a panel discussion with the series producers and Rice archivists overseeing the collection housed at the Woodson Research Center, and a post-show reception.
Humanities NOW is a series of conversations that help students and others broaden their knowledge of our complex world. Hosted by Nicole Waligora-Davis, School of Humanities and Arts Associate Dean and Alan Dugald McKillip Associate Professor in the Department of English and Creative Writing, Humanities NOW conversations are open to all Rice students, faculty and staff, and the larger Houston community.
