A Message From Dean Gorman

Dear Rice Parents and Families,

In a recent note to undergraduates, I expressed amazement that the midway point of the fall semester has already come and gone. While the beginning of the semester was once again marked by COVID precautions, we have now been able to roll back many of these restrictions and are optimistic about the low positivity rate in our community. We will, of course, continue to monitor our situation and make changes as necessary, but for now, campus is starting to feel almost “normal”!

As I told your students, although campus life is slowly returning to normal, we should not discount the exceptional challenges that we have faced, and continue to face, during the pandemic. In my note, I highlighted various mental health resources including The Wellbeing and Counseling Center. I encourage all of our undergraduates to take advantage of this important resource.

In addition, other offices such as Student Health Services, Student Success Initiatives, Office of Academic Advising, and the Disability Resource Center provide a variety of resources for students and address critical concerns. Alongside a strong foundation of support from residential college teams and peer-to-peer groups like Rice Health Advisors and STRIVE Liaisons, Rice students are surrounded by a community of care, and we are ready and able to help your Owl navigate any challenges that may arise.

Sending my best wishes to you and your family,

Bridget Gorman, Dean of Undergraduates
