Rice alumna Caroline Shaw ’04 takes home Grammy gold

Rice Shepherd School of Music alumna and Pulitzer Prize winner Caroline Shaw ’04 has struck Grammy gold once again.

Shaw and fellow members of vocal ensemble Roomful of Teeth received the award for Best Chamber Music/Small Ensemble Performance for the album “Rough Magic.” The ensemble performed at Shepherd School’s Brockman Hall for Opera and hosted a seminar with Rice composition students in February 2023.

The Grammy is Shaw’s fourth. She previously won awards in 2022, 2020 and 2014 and has been nominated five times.

Described as a musician who “moves among roles, genres and mediums, trying to imagine a world of sound that has never been heard before but has always existed,” Shaw also has an honorary doctorate from Yale and a Thomas J. Watson Fellowship. She was the youngest recipient of the Pulitzer Prize for Music for her composition “Partita for 8 Voices” in 2013. Shaw has worked with a range of artists including Rosalía, Renée Fleming and Yo Yo Ma, and has contributed music to films and TV series including Fleishman is in Trouble, Bombshell, Yellowjackets, Maid, Dark and Beyonce’s Homecoming.
