‘Truly your class is one of a kind’: Rice’s Class of 2025 matriculates as largest ever
 

Rice’s Class of 2025 is notable for many reasons: With over 1,200 students, it’s the largest incoming freshman class in the university’s history — all part of the plan to increase the undergraduate student body to 4,800 by the time many of these new freshmen graduate.

 
 
Rice ranked by Niche as one of nation’s top 10 universities
 

Rice landed at No. 7 in Niche’s 2022 ratings of best colleges in the U.S. and topped the list as No. 1 among colleges in Texas. The university also ranked No. 4 on the Niche list of colleges with the nation’s best professors and No. 10 on its list of best college campuses.

 
 
CPRIT grant establishes Genetic Design and Engineering Center
 

Rice University faculty members led by bioengineer Gang Bao have been awarded a $4 million grant by the Cancer Prevention and Research Institute of Texas (CPRIT) to establish the Genetic Design and Engineering Center (GDEC). Rice’s first CPRIT Core Facility will provide a one-stop shop for Houston’s Texas Medical Center and other institutions that require custom DNA constructs but have neither the expertise nor the facilities to design and validate them.

 
 
Rice’s latest piece of public art, ‘Seif,’ lights up campus outside of Sid Rich College
 

Over 10 feet tall and glowing like a beacon day and night, the newest piece in the Rice Public Art collection is an eye-catching sculpture by Iranian-born artist Shirazeh Houshiary that makes a striking and elegant companion to the recently built Sid Richardson College tower.

Class of 2025 welcomed to Rice in classic O-Week spirit
 

A colorful Houston sunrise lit up the Audubon Blend brick of the new Sid Richardson College as the tower welcomed the earliest batch of new Rice students. Starting at 6:30 a.m., Aug. 15, incoming freshmen and transfer students from across the world converged on campus in cars, transport vans and shuttle buses for the first day of O-Week, Rice’s annual orientation week before every fall semester.

 
 
10 winners at IBB Summer Undergraduate Research Symposium
 

Posters by 10 summer interns were chosen as the best at this year’s Institute of Biosciences and Bioengineering Summer Undergraduate Research Symposium at the BioScience Research Collaborative Aug. 6. A total of 69 undergraduate students showcased 66 posters inspired by their summer projects, representing 10 bio-related Rice summer undergraduate research programs.

 
 
Owl swimmer Lettenberger takes silver medal at Paralympics
 

Rice swimmer Ahalya Lettenberger’s late surge earned her a silver medal in the 200-meter individual medley SM7 final Friday at the Paralympics in Tokyo. Lettenberger’s time of 3 minutes, 2.82 seconds trailed only fellow American Mallory Weggemann (2:55.48) and was her best ever in an international competition.

Save the date for Families Weekend at Owl Together, Oct. 25-30
 

After a year of inspired action, creativity, resilience and strength, we’re coming together as one to celebrate the Rice community at Owl Together, a combined Families Weekend and Homecoming & Reunion experience. Events will include the President’s Town Hall, Rice football activities and tailgate, inspiring lectures, the Rice Ring Celebration and much more. Stay tuned for more details about this exciting week.

 
 
Parents can register to host an Owl Edge Externship by Oct. 6
 

The Center for Career Development is excited to continue offering the Owl Edge Externship, a job-shadowing program over Winter Break and Spring Break. The 2022 sessions will be offered in both in-person or virtual environments. During the university's Winter Recess and Spring Break students will be matched to a host (you!) to learn more about a career path. We invite you to help Rice students gain a professional advantage by serving as a career mentor.

Join the 2021 Campbell Lecture Series on climate change, Sept. 13-14
 

Environmental novelist Amitav Ghosh, whose fiction and non-fiction writing have distinguished him as one of India’s most renowned authors, will headline the 2021 Campbell Lecture Series sponsored by Rice’s School of Humanities. Ghosh will speak and take questions from the audience during two evenings of lectures open to the public and broadcast live via Zoom.

Participate in the 21-Day Equity Challenge beginning Sept. 13
 

The Rice Alumni 21-Day Equity Challenge will provide an opportunity for the broader Rice community to develop a deeper understanding of diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) initiatives and build more thoughtful habits around DEI efforts in personal and professional environments. All Rice alumni, parents, students and friends are welcome to take part in this learning and discussion series.
