While the beginning of each new semester is always an exciting time at Rice, it has been anything but routine recently, and I remain grateful to our students, faculty and families for being adaptable as we spent the first two weeks learning and teaching remotely. The majority of our students are now back, bringing energy to our campus and engaging in a multifaceted learning experience.

Ruth López Turley named next director of Rice's Kinder Institute for Urban Research
 

Ruth López Turley, a prolific education researcher, professor of sociology and director of Rice University's Houston Education Research Consortium (HERC), has been selected as the next director of the university's Kinder Institute for Urban Research after current director Bill Fulton steps down June 30, 2022.

 
 
Rice strengthening its commitment to loan-free financial aid
 

Rice is expanding its commitment to loan-free financial aid, which allows students to receive assistance without taking out student loans. The university has long offered loan-free financial aid to students with family annual incomes under $200,000. Beginning next fall, all students — domestic and international — who qualify for need-based assistance will be able to receive financial aid without taking out student loans.

 
 
Rice’s Doerr Institute expands CoachRICE program to serve other institutions
 

The Doerr Institute for New Leaders at Rice University is expanding its CoachRICE leadership coaching program, providing other institutions of higher education with training to improve how they develop students as high-potential leaders. CoachRICE is a globally recognized coach training program accredited by the International Coaching Federation (ICF). It’s one of many leader development programs offered by the Doerr Institute, providing participants with 80 hours of training and practical experience to enhance their leadership coaching skills. Rice wins NEH grant to create digital database of Atlantic slave trade
 

Associate professor of history Daniel Domingues has been awarded $149,995 from the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) for his project with Lancaster University to develop the Digital Archive of the Atlantic Slave Trades. This open-access resource will digitize, transcribe, translate and link manuscript materials documenting the South Sea Company and its contribution to the trans-Atlantic and intra-American slave trades.

 
 
Moody makes ‘Soundwaves’ for its spring show
 

Nick Cave’s wearable works of art, “Soundsuits,” intentionally obscure the human inside, transforming a person into a colorful alien presence that makes curious noises with every shuffle and step. Anyone could be performing inside one of Cave’s “Soundsuits,” and that’s the point.

December convocation celebrates new alumni
 

To accommodate the increasing number of August and December graduates, Rice held a single December convocation ceremony for all students eligible to walk across the stage. Take a look back at our December 2021 convocation video and celebrate our new graduates.

 
 
Shepherd's got a Stradivarius
 

Rice University’s Shepherd School of Music felt the holiday spirit early this year thanks to a generous friend who’s lending it a coveted Stradivarius violin — and letting a different student play the instrument each year. The instrument lent to Rice, known as the 1687 Kubelik, is owned by Peter Naimoli, a collector of fine string instruments. Graduate student Clara Saitkoulov will be the first student to use it.

 
 
Jewish Food class visits Kenny and Ziggy’s ‘deli maven’ for dinner
 

The syllabus did promise dinner at a deli, after all. Included among the coursework for Joshua Furman’s Jewish Food: Religion, Culture and Consumption from the Bible to Bagels is a screening of “Deli Man,” a documentary examining the state of the Jewish deli through the lens of Houston’s own Ziggy Gruber. Students in the class were required to write a paper on the film, making it all the more exciting to meet Gruber himself during an end-of-course dinner at his deli, Kenny & Ziggy’s.

 
 
Men's basketball starts home conference slate with pair of victories
 

The Rice men's basketball team prevailed in its first two home Conference USA games of the season, defeating Middle Tennessee State University Jan. 6 and the University of Alabama at Birmingham Jan. 8. Rice’s next game is against the University of Texas at San Antonio on Feb. 3.

Register for the Shepherd Society Family Concert
 

The Shepherd School of Music invites you to its Family Concert on Feb. 26, sponsored by The Shepherd Society. Join the Shepherd School chamber orchestra for a children-friendly performance of Camille Saint-Saëns’ “The Carnival of the Animals,” a chamber music piece that combines musical jokes and astonishing evocations of the animal kingdom. Please also join on March 4 for an evening with the Shepherd School Chamber Players as they perform “Serenata” and other selections.
