A Message from Dean Gorman
|
As our undergraduate students move forward with their summer plans and the Class of 2023 sets out to blaze new paths, I reflect on an incredible academic year and look forward to more exciting opportunities for learning this summer. In our last newsletter, I mentioned the transformative gift from the Moody Foundation, which allows students to engage in a broad array of learning experiences ranging from collaborative research to internships with community organizations to study abroad experiences.

This year’s graduation festivities were the first to be led by Rice President Reginald DesRoches, and featured remarks from Karine Jean-Pierre, President Joe Biden’s White House press secretary and a key member of the administrations of both Biden and former President Barack Obama.
|
Amid the celebration at Rice University’s 110th Commencement ceremony on May 6, there was one unforgettable moment that stood out to everyone in attendance: when President Reginald DesRoches offered Rice’s first-ever posthumous degree to the family of Kamryn Sanamo.

At the Fall National College Media Convention, the nation’s largest gathering of college journalists and advisers, the Rice Thresher staff earned a podium position in the “Best of Show” category — reminiscent of a David vs. Goliath achievement.

Not even pouring rain could stop Rice University Owls from gathering in celebration of the Moody Foundation’s historic $100 million gift to the campus. More than 1,000 students flooded Tudor Fieldhouse April 7 for Moody X-Fest ’23.

It was a night to remember as the Black Student Association (BSA) celebrated students, faculty, staff and alumni at the Black Excellence Gala, an awards-style banquet honoring Owls for their dedication to the success of Black students at Rice.
|
|
|
|
The Rice women's track and field team took the lead on Day 1 and never looked back as the Owls earned their first outdoor title since 2016 at the 2023 Conference USA Championships in Denton, Texas.
