Over two days of festivities, Rice’s 109th commencement celebrated a resilient class of undergraduate and graduate students, most of whom spent the majority of their Rice careers under the specter of COVID-19. The final May 7 ceremony marked the first universitywide commencement in three years.

After nearly two decades leading Rice, David Leebron leaves behind a school transformed. When asked how he hopes his presidency will be remembered, Leebron demurred. “It’s hard not to be immodest in answering that question. One thing would be just to not answer it,” he quipped.

Owls recognize faculty with award for superior teaching |
|
Nine faculty received the 2022 George R. Brown Award for Superior Teaching, which honors top Rice instructors by votes from young alumni who graduated within the past two, three and five years. As the university resumes normal operations after two years, Rice News asked the recipients for their thoughts on returning to teaching in-person classes and keeping students engaged.

Brockman Hall for Opera opens its doors for community open house |
|
Rice University's Shepherd School of Music opened the doors to the new Brockman Hall for Opera April 9, welcoming more than 2,000 guests to a community open house. Attendees enjoyed performances by various instrumentalists and the Rice Chorale, toured different spaces throughout the hall, dressed up in opera costumes and took pictures on stage in the Lucian and Nancy Morrison Theater.

Moody Foundation funds 12 new student opportunity endowments |
|
The Moody Fund for Student Opportunity will finance a dozen newly created Rice endowments, providing students with an extensive array of enhanced educational opportunities financed by a $50 million commitment from the Moody Foundation. The 12 endowments will support a wide range of programs and initiatives focused directly on the Rice student experience, sponsoring everything from international travel to visiting speakers to civic leadership activities.

Beer Bike: A tradition unlike any other |
|
On April 2, Rice’s beloved Beer Bike returned in largely pre-pandemic form: races, water balloon fights and all. After a modified version in 2021 and the event’s first-ever cancellation in 2020 due to COVID-19, Beer Bike 2022 saw the joyous return of the Rice community cheering on the residential college bike teams, as well as the epic pre-race water balloon fight and parade.

NSF awards 38 Graduate Research Fellowships to Rice students |
|
The National Science Foundation has awarded 38 Graduate Research Fellowships to Rice University students. The prestigious fellowships are intended to develop the next generation of scientists and engineers through support of their graduate educations. Fellows are provided three years of financial support within a five-year fellowship period, including a $34,000 annual stipend and a $12,000 cost-of-education allowance to the graduate institution. Student startups awarded more than $75,000 at 2022 Napier Rice Launch Challenge |
|
A student startup developing a filter that helps limit water waste in power plants claimed the top prize at this year's H. Albert Napier Rice Launch Challenge (NRLC). The first-place venture, Helix Earth Technologies, aims to help power-plant operators reduce water use and thus their operating costs. Founder Rawand Rasheed, a doctoral candidate in mechanical engineering at Rice University, has been testing his proof-of-concept on the power plants on campus.

Rice Director of Athletics Joe Karlgaard presented President David Leebron and University Representative Ping Sun with a framed jersey during Saturday’s baseball game against the University of Texas at San Antonio. Leebron also threw out the game’s ceremonial first pitch.

Inaugural cohort of Humanities Dean’s Fellows hails culture of collaboration |

Many students come to Rice specifically to perform undergraduate research, and humanities students are no exception. A new program through the School of Humanities Dean's Office is equipping the inaugural cohort of Dean’s Fellows in the Humanities and the Arts with the tools, resources and opportunities to pursue their research interests — including a $3,500 summer stipend.

Kathy Duplessis, retired director of development for parents and families at Rice University, cultivated long-lasting relationships between the university and its constituents around the world.
